Mario Kart XXL was a Game Boy Advance tech demo created in 2004 by German developer Manfred Trenz for Nintendo to show that the system could handle a more involved background scaling process than the one used in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, which would create a much more convincing illusion of the game being truly three-dimensional. However, Nintendo ended up rejecting the prototype and not creating any further Mario Kart games for the Game Boy Advance, instead opting to release the next entry on the Nintendo DS instead, which could natively handle true 3D graphics.
